Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving. -Albert Einstein

Early Track Racing Bike

E.C. Simmons Laclede Model ‘B’ Track Racer

I come into this 1899/1900 E.C. Simmons Laclede Model ‘B’ Track Racer, presented in the photo stream of amphalon’s at Flickr. This is the real thing! Gosh how beautiful is this bicycle!!!
Apparently this bike was found in 2006 in up-state New York, USA, this bicycle is typical of the golden era of pioneer track racing. It has been cleaned and re-commissioned back into life. 1” Inch pitch chain set & chain, 28” wheels with beautiful semi-drop, wide track handlebars.

This particular bicycle is very similar to that used on the 30th June 1899 by Charles ‘Mile-a-Minute’ Murphy. He persuaded a railway company to board-in two miles of track and run behind a railroad locomotive so he could sit in its smoke and smut to ride a mile in a minute. It took him 57.8 seconds.
